Powder vs. Strips vs. Gel: Which Teeth Whitening Method Actually Works?

By 4TheNorm · September 2026 · 4 min read

Walk down any oral care aisle and you'll find a wall of whitening options — strips, gels, trays, pens, and now, powders. They don't all work the same way, and they don't all fit into a real daily routine. Here's an honest breakdown of each approach.

Whitening Strips

Strips are the most familiar option. A thin, peroxide-coated film is pressed directly onto teeth and left in place for a set amount of time, usually 20 to 30 minutes.

The upside: No mixing, no tools, and minimal setup.

The tradeoff: Peroxide may cause sensitivity for some people, and strips can struggle to reach evenly around curved teeth or tight gaps.

Whitening Gel and Trays

Gel-based systems are usually applied with a small brush or loaded into a mouth tray. Dentist-supervised versions may use custom-fitted trays and different concentrations than at-home kits.

The upside: A controlled application, especially with a custom-fitted tray.

The tradeoff: Cost can climb for professionally supervised options, while at-home gels may carry the same sensitivity concerns as strips. Trays also require dedicated wear time.

Whitening Support Powder

A whitening support powder takes a different approach. Rather than relying on peroxide bleaching, it can be incorporated into normal brushing as part of a consistent smile-care routine.

The upside: No trays, timers, or separate session. Apply powder to a wet toothbrush, then brush teeth as normal.

The tradeoff: It is intended as gradual, everyday support rather than an overnight transformation.

So Which One Fits Your Routine?

The right choice depends on your priorities, sensitivity, schedule, and guidance from your dental professional. If you want an easy ritual without timers or trays, powder may be the simplest fit.

That's the gap Formula 37 was built to fill: a whitening support powder designed to complement daily brushing without adding a separate step.
